South Dakota Healthy Kids, Healthy America
Overview
In September 2007, South Dakota was one of 10 states awarded funding by the National Governor's Association to combat nationwide childhood obesity. South Dakota awarded the grant funds to 17 schools and out-of-school time (OST) programs to improve nutrition and physical activity policy and environments.
This project is a partnership administered through the health department's Healthy South Dakota Program and the health and education departments' Coordinated School Health Program. A face-to-face training was provided to the 17 funded grantees in Pierre in January 2008.
Presentation topics included nutrition and physical activity strategies, creating and sustaining effective policies, tools & resources, and developing partnerships and advocacy for improved nutrition and physical activity among SD youth. These trainings are available through the links below. Schools and OST programs are encouraged to access the training modules for use with school and agency staff during in-services, meetings with parents and community members, and regional trainings.
