Web-Based Training Modules

Schools and outside-of-school time programs have a new tool to help combat childhood obesity in South Dakota. Web-based training modules for improving nutrition and physical activity policy and environments are now available by clicking on the Healthy Kids link to the right. Module topics include nutrition and physical activity strategies, creating and sustaining effective policies, tools & resources, and developing partnerships and advocacy for improved nutrition and physical activity among our youth.

Tobacco Control Toolkit Available for SD Schools

The South Dakota Tobacco Control Program now offers an online toolkit to help schools develop and implement a comprehensive tobacco control program.  This toolkit includes sections on gathering ideas for tobacco prevention activities, developing and implementing tobacco-free policies and selecting tobacco prevention curriculum for classroom use.



Mini-grants Available: Deadline December 31st!

Mini-grant funds are available from the South Dakota Department of Education for Gardening mini-grants and for Fun Fruit and Vegetable Event mini-grants. The grants are intended to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption as well as physical activity.

Applications are available from the SD Department of Education at: http://doe.sd.gov/oess/cans/nutrition.  Applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2008.  Agencies will be notified by January 21st if they have been awarded a mini-grant.  Grant activities must be completed by September 1, 2009.

Huron wins HealthierUS School Challenge!

Four elementary schools in the Huron School District have won the HealthierUS Challenge at the Silver level. They are being recognized nationally by the United States Department of Agriculture for their efforts. For more information visit http://teamnutrition.usda.gov/HealthierUS/silvergoldtn.html. South Dakota Schools Walk

South Dakota mileage club logoThe Coordinated School Health Program promotes the South Dakota Schools Walk program to increase physical activity and fight childhood obesity. Schools Walk is designed for students in grades K-6 but all ages can participate, including after school programs and other youth organizations. Teachers, After School Program Coordinators and youth organization leaders can register for the South Dakota Schools Walk program and the accompanying “Mileage Club Incentive Packet” by clicking here.
